Special circumstances

Four questions most people answer with no. Each one can take months out of the period your Elterngeld is calculated from — earlier months then count instead. If none of it applies, just continue.

In the last two years, was there maternity protection or maternity pay — for this child or an earlier one? (optional)

These months are skipped so that maternity protection does not lower your Elterngeld.

In the last two years, was Elterngeld received for an older child? (optional)

Months in which you received Elterngeld within an older child's first 14 months of life (longer after a premature birth) are skipped so that they do not lower the Elterngeld for the new child. Later months count.

Was there less income because of an illness related to the pregnancy? (optional)

Months in which a pregnancy-related illness reduced income are skipped.

In the last two years, was there military service, including voluntary military service, or civilian national service? (optional)

Months of military or civilian national service are skipped as well.

Maternity protection for this child

Maternity protection starts six weeks before the calculated due date.

What will Parent 1 receive during maternity protection? (optional)

These benefits are set against Elterngeld day by day. For employees, the months of maternity protection before the birth are left out, even without maternity pay; if they would count for more, you can apply in the application for them to be counted, and the calculator then suggests it. For civil servants and soldiers they count as normal, because their pay continues.

The same as the unemployment benefit per day. The amount is on the notice from the employment agency (Agentur für Arbeit).

And the employer's supplement to maternity pay? (optional)
Because of the child's disability, did you apply to extend maternity protection to twelve weeks after the birth? (optional)

This is possible when a doctor diagnoses the disability within eight weeks of the birth (§ 3 Abs. 2 MuSchG).
