Your household

A few details about you and the child.

If the baby has already arrived: the date of birth.

Format: DD.MM.YYYY

The date the doctor or midwife calculated (it is in the maternity record, the Mutterpass). Maternity protection starts six weeks before it, and a child born six weeks or more early adds months of Elterngeld (German parental allowance).

Format: DD.MM.YYYY

Was it a premature birth in the sense of maternity protection: a birth weight under 2,500 grams, or was the child not yet fully mature and so needed substantially more care? (optional)

The doctor or the hospital certifies it. Maternity protection after the birth then lasts twelve weeks instead of eight. After any birth before the calculated due date, the days of maternity protection missed before the birth are added too. Extra months of Elterngeld depend only on how many weeks before the calculated due date the child arrived; the calculator works that out itself.

Does the child have a disability? (optional)

Then both parents may draw Basiselterngeld, the full monthly amount, at the same time, also for more than one month.

An estimate is enough.

Format: MM.YYYY

Who is applying for Elterngeld?
Does one of these apply?

Only then may one parent alone also take the two partner months and the Partnerschaftsbonus (the partnership bonus, § 4c BEEG). Otherwise it is at most 12 monthly amounts, and the other parent can apply for Elterngeld themselves.

Are you married or in a registered civil partnership?

Tax classes III, V and IV with factor exist only for married couples and registered civil partners, so the tax-class deadline depends on it.

Only used in the result text, for example “Anna takes the first seven months”.

Which of you is giving birth to the child?

Where you live. That is where you apply.

You can use the calculator in full, free. We do not offer a filled-in application form for this state — here you apply through your state's own portal.

Which federal states?

Which Elterngeldstelle (parental allowance office) is responsible for you? (optional)

In the state of Bremen, the offices of the city of Bremen and of Bremerhaven publish different forms. The office where you live is responsible.

How many children are you expecting in this birth?
Do older siblings live in your household?

We ask because of the sibling bonus: with young siblings in the household, Elterngeld is 10 percent higher, at least €75 a month.

Was your taxable income in the calendar year before the birth above €175,000? (optional)

Then there is no Elterngeld (§ 1(8) BEEG). The calculator cannot work out taxable income; it is on your tax assessment notice. If you do not know, leave the question open.
