Income

For each parent: what is earned before the birth. We mean the regular taxable pay, on the payslip usually “Steuerbrutto” or “steuerpflichtiges Brutto”.

What kind of income does Parent 1 have?

We cannot calculate self-employed income yet

Self-employed and mixed income follow their own rules: the basis is the tax assessment, not the payslip. This version of the calculator does not cover those rules, and we would rather not calculate at all than calculate inexactly.

The official Elterngeld calculator is free at familienportal.de (in German). The Elterngeldstelle advises free of charge.

Without tax-free supplements for Sunday, holiday and night work (§ 3b EStG), without pay converted into a company pension and without other tax-free parts such as a nursery allowance or a job ticket. Taxable benefits in kind such as a company car for private use belong in it. Christmas pay, holiday pay and bonuses do not: we ask about those separately below.

Then enter each month before the birth, each time the regular taxable pay. For a month without pay, such as unpaid leave, sick pay after six weeks of illness or before the job started, enter 0. In months of maternity protection, only the pay for the days actually worked, without maternity pay and without the employer’s supplement. When maternity protection or Elterngeld for an older child takes months out, the table reaches back as far as needed.

The months appear here once the due date has been entered.

Gross pay per month, the 24 months before the birth
Were there any one-off payments in the last two years — Christmas pay, holiday pay, bonuses?

One-off payments do not count towards Elterngeld. We ask anyway so that we can show you, in the result, that they have been set aside — and why the result can be lower than you expected.

It is on the payslip.

For example 0.912. It is on the payslip.

Has the tax class changed in the last two years? (optional)

Elterngeld does not always use the current tax class: it depends on how long each class applied before the birth. Without an answer we use the current class for the whole period.

The first month it was on the payslip.

Format: MM.YYYY

For example 0.912. It is on the payslip.

Only if you are already planning a change.

For example 0.912. It is on the payslip.

Does Parent 1 pay church tax?
How is Parent 1 health-insured?

Most employees earning below the compulsory insurance limit are compulsorily insured. Those who earn more, or are civil servants, and are still in a statutory fund are voluntary members. The flat deduction for health and long-term care insurance applies to Elterngeld only for the compulsorily insured (§ 2f BEEG).

Almost all employees are, working students too. Civil servants, for example, are not, nor are members of a professional pension scheme (Versorgungswerk).

Is Parent 1 insured in unemployment insurance? (optional)

Almost all employees are, members of a professional pension scheme (Versorgungswerk) such as doctors, lawyers or architects too. Not, for example, a working student, a civil servant or someone in a mini-job. Without an answer we go by the pension insurance.
